Site Surveys

Why should I have a Survey?: In implementing a wireless infrastructure both VAR’s and end users often ignore the value of a professional survey. Such an omission can cost the customer, and reseller dearly. A professional survey not only addresses issues such as bandwidth, coverage, interference and redundancy but can actually save cost in terms of equipment, cabling and configuration. Without a survey all these potential problems are very much left to fate. The effective range of wireless Access Points/Ports is limited both in terms of the use of the most appropriate antennae and the equipment location. Complex environments such as warehouses mean that the propagation of radio signals requires careful consideration and testing. A good survey is an investment NOT a cost!

What does a Survey give me?: All TCi surveys are tailored to the particular customers needs to take account of how the network will be utilised and the level of resilience required. e.g. a survey of a site for use with Voice Over IP (VoiP) technology would usually require a higher level of available bandwidth than a site utilising barcode scanning/handheld technology (PDA’s).

TCi Surveys include a site drawing showing the accurate location for equipment including digital photography of any Access Points/Ports- A cells-of-coverage diagram is also provided. Where A/G surveys are carried out, a Spectrum Analyser sweep is also included. TCi surveys will take account of cabling both in terms of data (Cat5e, Cat6 etc. - max length 90m) from Access Points/Ports to the communications cabinet or Fibre Optic cabling if over 90 metres. Fibre Optic cabling can also be used to link hub/switches to new communications cabinets to branch off from the existing network. TCi will provide a full equipment list and take account of the need for suitable antennae and enclosures to protect Access Points/Ports. As part of any survey TCi will assess safety issues and can provide a Risk Assessment and Method Statement for the HSE management regarding methods of installing the cabling/equipment and the viability of working on an operational site.
